THE COVID-19 CONSPIRACIES... HAS THE WORLD GONE BAT-SH*T CRAZY?


It has not been long since COVID-19 began turning the world upside down, the “China virus” as Donald Trump called it - has revealed itself to be infinitely worse than what most of us could have imagined. It appears to have started in Wuhan, Hubei province, China, in December 2019. At the day and time of writing 8th April 2020, four months later it is now a global pandemic. I have written about Covid-19 in my most recent blog posts, only now as time has passed I have my own experience of the situation here in Hong Kong to share as information. Me personally, like many expats here in Hong Kong back in January, I only watched and observed, bewildered by the local (Hongkongers) reaction to the proposed threat of this new Coronavirus. The response here in Central by the locals was immediate, as if every Hong Kong person woke up and put on a mask just like it was wearing a tie to the office. The reaction, had the city come to resemble an outdoor hospital almost overnight. The only people not wearing masks were either unconvinced expats or people unable to purchase because of the shortage of supplies. I did not consider the situation serious at all. Having lived in the city for five years, I have witnessed - what I considered to be (based on my own personal judgement) over-reactions - which doesn’t mean I’m right of course - ranging from the fear of ghosts, to rainstorms and the political protests. I thought this too, was simply an over-reaction as far as I could determine. Forgetting of course that many here still have scary memories and experience from the damage dealing with the SARS Virus, 2002. Initially, SARS and COVID-19 viruses both jumped from animals to humans. Horseshoe bats have been implicated in the transition to humans, although horseshoe bats were no longer sold in the wet markets and Wuhan University pointed out that “COVID-19 was linked to horseshoe bats, which do not hibernate in cities in China.” They are used in biomedical research, however, and Wuhan, the city in which COVID-19 originated, has two of such labs. Researchers investigating the virus’ origins speculate a scientist might have been bitten by a bat and became infected. The most worrying thing about COVID-19 is that it is a new disease and we are still learning how it spreads and it appears to spread person to person, when a person coughs or sneezes and then are inhaled by a nearby person. Or it may be spread by touching an infected surface or area and then touching your own face or mouth. One of the biggest problems being that transmission may also occur before a person becomes symptomatic.

All of the information I have shared so far is pretty legitimate, or at least not complete bullsh*t. While nothing I write should be considered to be an absolute truth, I aim to support and encourage people to gain some clarity of thought during this challenging and uncertain time. I hope to share information that better focuses on the solution in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, because many media sources are only encouraging fear and in doing so are amplifying the problem. Here is a transcript from a recent Instagram post I made regarding the sharing of conspiracy ‘THEORIES’ on social media, as they are worryingly gaining wide spread attention: I like a good conspiracy theory but these Coronavirus conspiracy theories are too much. A distraction from reality when you're on lockdown maybe, but they are getting too much... Bill Gates and de-population. New World Order. Illuminati. 5G that's killing people, not the virus. So, at a time where everyone is scared, people are amplifying fear and some are even profiting from fear mongering. They might wave a flag for freedom of speech, yet it's unethical and certainly not helpful when playing to people's fears. Sure, historically the Government have lied: "The War on drugs" "Cannabis is bad" There maybe some evidence that 5g is bad for us, who knows? What we do know for a FACT is that eating junk food, drinking cola and smoking is bad for our health, yet many people are sat with their fat arses on the couch stuffing their faces and complaining about 5g. None of us really know what is going on, yet layering conspiracy on top of conspiracy, like layers of an onion doesn't help. It was entertaining at first, but now it's taking the biscuit. We should better focus our energy on staying healthy and helping each other during tough times. This quote springs to mind: “There may be fairies at the bottom of the garden. There is no evidence for it, but you can't prove that there aren't any, so shouldn't we be agnostic with respect to fairies?” - Richard Dawkins Now I will go back to being a "sheeple" or maybe just chasing sheeps because I am Welsh. Stay safe people and wash your hands. I’d like to finish this post with some facts, then a final thought, Jerry springer style (If you can remember him!ha) FACTS The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was discovered in 2019 and has not been previously identified in humans. At the time of writing the Coronavirus is a global pandemic.

There’s currently no vaccine to prevent Coronavirus disease (COVID-19). You can protect yourself and help prevent spreading the virus to others if you: DO Wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds, with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub Cover your nose and mouth with a disposable tissue or flexed elbow when you cough or sneeze Avoid close contact (1 meter or 3 feet) with people who are unwell Stay home and self-isolate from others in the household if you feel unwell

DON’T Touch your eyes, nose, or mouth if your hands are not clean. When things become uncertain we get scared, especially when a life threatening virus like COVID-19 unexpectedly comes along and the world is not prepared. The result is global chaos, fear, panic and a seemingly mass uncontrollable spread of the virus, the reality is people are dying and our health systems are overwhelmed. Both the economy and society are frozen and slowly breaking down. We do not know for certain how or where the virus started? How long the pandemic may last? How long before we have a vaccine? As a result, no one really knows WTF is going on or what is going to happen, not even the experts. The only thing that we all have in common is that we are all uncertain and afraid. With all the panic, fear, anxiety and uncertainty generally amplified by the media, we all struggle to make sense of the world because a pandemic is a difficult situation to rationalise. That’s where the opportunity comes in for for the tin foil wearing “superstitious experts” to raise from their cushion and share their plant based, dope smoking, vegan eating, sun-gazing wisdom with the rest of us. I’m being judgemental here of course, yet I feel the right to be because this is a serious situation we are all in. Just like everyone else, my life is effected by the virus and the current situation and uncertainty is scary. Even if you believe in the conspiracy THEORIES, please, please follow the government guidelines and suggestions mentioned above, you can believe any theory what you want, please at least act responsibly. If you think I’m a “sheeple” in suggesting we best focus our energy on sharing hope not fear, I’m okay with that. If you think that I am the problem because I am not “awake”, that’s okay too. Whatever your thoughts, please wash your hands and at least to the best of your ability don’t be an assh*le. Undoubtably I’m still an assh*le for sure, and many people might say that this post is ironic and that I’m ignorant, maybe? However as far as fighting against the virus goes, I’m trying my best and it’s probably better for us all, to choose to focus on our actions now and their impact, spread optimism and hope not hate and fear. We are all in this together.
